Woweee! I won't bore anyone with details on the difficulties I had last year trying to source paper straws at a reasonable price for the emporium, let's just say I did my best... but what I will tell you is that the Australasian distributors are finally bringing them into this hemisphere, meaning the straws are way more economical. Check it out! Jumbo sized boxes of 144 straws for $15 + courier. That's a hearty supply of striped loveliness for under 20 bucks! Available in red/white, blue/white, and grey/white.

It is official! The Pavlova was invented on the New Zealand side of the Tasman. Big thanks to the Oxford English Dictionary for substantiating what New Zealanders already knew. NEW IN THE EMPORIUM - FOLDING RULERS.

I have been so excited about getting my shipment of folding rulers - the three month boat ride they took to New Zealand felt like an eternity. And three months is how long I have had my sample one metre folding ruler. I can honestly say I use it most days, sometimes many times a day. I use it to measure parcels for posting, dimensions of items being listed in the Emporium, metres of bakery twine... not to mention all those home handyperson uses... It is small enough to fit nicely into my cat pencil holder, but big enough not to vanish amongst my mess of paper. It is super sturdy and has survived plenty of play time with my enthusiastic 4 year old. Plus, with its springy hinges it doubles as a nice stress reliever, and I have spent loads of time just opening it out and shutting it again, whilst gazing at nothing in particular.

I've got limited stock of the one metre and two metre rulers available now in the Emporium. These folding rulers are the real deal, made by Stabila in Germany for burly tradesman-type folk to use all day every day. They make great gifts for blokes, or new home owners, or crafters, or you! Oh, and don't forget Fathers' Day is really quite soon...

Put together with great thought and detail by Aucklander Ellie Smith (of Miss Ellie May fame), Extra Curricular mainly focuses on spotlighting people who work on creative projects in their spare time, offering inspiration to those who would also like to go down that path. Issue 3 broadens this focus and has a great mix of articles, including a photography featurette, interviews with crafters, and stories about roller derby, night classes, and why craft is good for you. And for those of you who missed out, I have just two copies of Extra Curricular Issue 2 available, so don't dilly dally if you want one!

SOME ETSY FAVES NOW IN THE EMPORIUM.

There are a few papery things that are widely available on Etsy, but not so readily available here in the Land of the Long White Cloud... my long-time faves include stripey paper straws, bakery twine, and washi tape. I'm pleased to say that I'm stocking a small range of each of these in the Emporium, bringing them closer to home. Competitively priced, they are all available for under $12 (including shipping). And all these things make lovely gifts too y'know!

The temptation to use the gorgeous paper straws for every drink I pour is overwhelming... and don't underestimate the less obvious green/white and fuschia/white straws - they really are blimmin lovely! I'll be getting red/white and grey/white back in again soon. You get a lovely package of 25 straws for $7.

As for bakery twine, after investing in some huge rolls in the stuff a couple of years ago, I use it for everything and anything. The novelty hasn't worn off at all. There's nothing like a brown paper package tied up with string! At the moment I've red/white, baby blue/white, and brown/white. I'm selling 20 metres for $6 - cheap as chips! Plus, because it's wee, if you're just after string the postage around NZ is only $1.

I've already blogged about the washi tape, so won't go on too much... but it really is great stuff. I highly recommend having a roll or 2 on hand for making just about anything look a whole heap more special!

Let's Find Out What Electricity Does is the second peek into a Let's Find Out book from my collection. Thankfully, this book keeps the science of electricity out of the story, as I don't stand a hope of understanding those sorts of things. It instead focuses on what electricity does - mainly, it seems, powering appliances which make a housewife's lot a little easier! Let's Find Out What Electricity Does describes electricity as a genie that brings power to your home, and the book opens with a nod to Aladdin and his lamp. The cover and 7" are red/orange, and the colour used for the illustrations is orange.

I've been excitedly awaiting a look at this book of music posters by graphic designer Jason Munn, and it really is ace! Thanks to my friend Lauren, I am lucky enough to be the proud owner of a She and Him poster (now sold out). I'm a big fan of Jason's minimalist designs and colour choices, not to mention a number of the bands he has worked with, including Beck, The Pixies, the Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, Calexico, Tortoise, Flight of the Conchords...I could go on! The book is page after page of clever poster art (over 150 in there), and there is lots of fantastic silver and gold ink.
This really is a terrific book for your coffee table!

I have a collection of vintage Let's Find Out children's books that I am super fond of, and thought I'd share. The books are written by Martha and Charles Shapp and feature a variety of illustrators. Each book includes a 7" record. I love that each book is a different colour and that colour is used throughout in the illustrations, and the colour of the record. I don't know how many books there are in the series, I have around 20 in my collection. I'm going to sell any double ups over at the Emporium and currently Let's Find Out About Safety is listed for sale. So, the plan is that each week I'll post some images of one of the Let's Find Out books from my collection... starting today...

Just added today - a lovely vintage copy of Mike and the Modelmakers by M.Sasek. This great book was published in 1970 by Matchbox cars company Lesney and tells the story of how Matchbox cars are made. Great for Matchbox collectors, or Sasek collectors, or little boys (as is the case in our house). I'll also be adding more of Sasek's republished "This Is..." series over the next couple of days. Still to come are: This Is Greece, This Is New York, This Is Paris, This is London, This is The Way to the Moon, This is Rome... They are all amazingly illustrated and a great read!

The brand spanking new, first ever issue of Extra Curricular was launched a couple of weeks ago and I was honoured to have been invited to be part of numero uno! The magazine features interviews with people who run creative side projects, along with being full time other things - in my case, a full time mum. Ellie has done a terrific job putting it all together, there's lots of interesting folk to ready about, and the magazine looks awesome! Check out the Extra Curricular blog for where to buy.
